“B” Well and “B” Happy: Vitamin B Benefits and Deficiency

When people are truly low on any of the B vitamins, depression is one of the earliest symptoms. In fact, studies show that at least one in four of all people hospitalized for depression is deficient in pyridoxine (B-6) and cobalamin (B-12); another study suggests that over three-quarters of all depressed patients have a pyridoxine deficiency. Giving these patients even small doses of pyridoxine (B-6) improves their depression. The Optimum dose for B Vitamins for adults can range from 25mg to 300 mg daily, but workers with stressful jobs may require more, take up to 1000 mg day. Sadly, only a fraction of the adults in the United States are currently getting the recommended daily intake of all B vitamins by diet alone.

A total of eight B vitamins (six of which are essential), make up the essential components for transforming carbohydrates into glucose and for metabolizing fats in the body. Each provides a different service to the body, but they also work synergistically. B vitamins contribute to healthy hair, skin and eyes and play an important role in fetal health and development. Because B vitamins are water-soluble, the body uses them, but cannot store them. This means people need to consistently replenish their supply with healthy foods or supplements.

Children and Adults: Dehydration Dangers

Even though summer is wrapping for most of us with little children or educators going back to work for the fall, and vacationers taking advantage of the sun and beaches before white pants become a lesser trendy wardrobe staple, the strong sun, hot temperatures and humid atmosphere still lingers around. Especially to those who are busy with children or pets, multi-tasking several “to-do” items off our never ending list, we may find ourselves more tired, drained, sun beaten, hot and yes, dehydrated! If you are thirsty, common sense tells you to get a drink. Did you know that dehydration has already begun to set in by the time your brain sends the signal that you need a drink. That is why it is so important to get your fill of clear liquids (water is best) prior to physical activity. This goes (especially so) for your little ones, too! It is critical to overall good health to drink water regularly throughout the day, even when the sun is not shining outside and the season is not summer. Causes of dehydration go far beyond hot-weather activity. When drinking water is a part of your daily routine, the risks for dehydration – a serious condition that can turn deadly, can be prevented. The Mayo Clinic reports that adults lose more than 10 cups of water in a given day, just by taking part in everyday activities, and failure to replace that water, may place your health at risk.

In the Air and In Our Foods: Benzene Dangers

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines benzene as a chemical that is a colorless or light yellow liquid at room temperature, has a sweet odor and is highly flammable. And just why should you be familiar with this chemical? Not only is benzene ranked in the top 20 chemicals for production volume in the United States, many industries use benzene to make other chemicals that are used to make plastics, resins, styrofoam, nylon and synthetic fibers. Benzene is also used to make some types of lubricants, rubbers, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides. If you use tobacco products, (yes you guessed it) you are also taking in large doses of benzene. If you live next to industrial factories, gas stations or hazardous waste/treatment plants, start educating yourself on the dangers of possible side effects.
