Meditating on Loving Kindness (adapted from Jack Kornfield)

This meditation uses words, images, and feelings to evoke a loving kindness and friendliness toward oneself and others. With each recitation of the phrases, we are expressing an intention, planting the seeds of loving wishes over and over in our heart.  Begin with yourself and gradually begin to include other people in your meditation, picturing each beloved person, recite inwardly the same phrases, evoking a sense of loving kindness for each person in turn.  Finally, include the difficult people in your life, wishing that they too may be filled with loving kindness and peace. This will take practice. But as your heart opens, first to loved ones and friends, you will find that in the end you won’t want to close it anymore.

So Let’s Begin~!

Yoga for Flexibility, Muscle Strength and Balance…Why Aren’t You Practicing?

When most people think of going to a yoga class, they think they need to be flexible.  I can’t tell you enough how many people will tell me that they could never take yoga, they’re not flexible enough.  Well, see that’s the problem, in order to become flexible you need to stretch.  Yes, there are some people who are just born flexible but most of us need to work on our flexibility daily. By increasing your flexibility you gain an increased range of motion in different joints.  If you lack flexibility, for example, you have a greater chance at having lower back issues (because your hamstrings are too tight), or your knees might give you trouble because you don’t have enough flexibility in the hips The thing is, if you practice yoga over time, the tight areas begin to open up and the poses that once seemed impossible are possible.

Yoga: Twisting Our Way to Health

Yoga is an optimal way of keeping our body limber, strong and healthy. Practicing yoga twisting poses can play a role in maintaining the health of our bodies. Twists require the work of the abdominal muscles, spine, neck, shoulders and pelvis they help to bring movement to the spine, release tension along the spinal column, stimulate our organs, improve digestion, and help to strengthen the musculature of the upper back and spine. Each twist improves the strength and flexibility in all of these areas but also while compressing and stretching the mid-torso, where the adrenals, kidneys, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, spleen and stomach are located, stimulates their function, and the absorption, digestion, and elimination of the intestines. One of the great things about twisting poses is you don’t need to be flexible to get the benefits they give. By stimulating the internal organs, detoxification is inevitable.

Strong and Sexy Toned Arms -Ten Minutes a Day

I am always looking for ways to tone my arms, shoulders and upper back but always seem to fall short on time, so I have created a quick no-nonsense 10 minute arm workout. I complete each exercise for one minute and then move on to the next. It’s perfect, because if you find you have more time in your day than just ten minutes, you can always do a couple of more sets (three sets is optimal). The key here is to be consistent. No one gets toned arms by doing ten minutes two times a week; you have to seriously commit 10 minutes on most days. In the grand scheme of things ask yourself, “Why not ten minutes?” It really isn’t much time at all, plus don’t you deserve it? I recommend starting the exercises below with 5-10 lb weights; you should feel challenged by the last 3-4 reps. If you’re finding you are unable able to complete a whole minute with the weights you’re using, start using lighter weights to begin and gradually increase the weights.

Chakras 101: What Are Chakras? A Basic Introduction

The Sanskrit word “chakra” translates as “wheel” and refers to energy centers living within us. It is believed that when the chakras are clear, you can awaken spiritual energies and move toward enlightenment. There are seven main chakras (pronounced “shock-ra”) and numerous minor ones in the human body. Similar to how your body functions automatically, your chakra centers also operate automatically. Our chakras are interdependent on each other for harmony and balance. These energy patterns are in certain specific locations on the body, five along the spine, and two on the head, each correlates with its own distinct color, location and function. When one part of a chakra center is out of sync it may eventually effect its other parts and possibly its neighboring chakra. Chakras are connected to our being on several different levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. When a chakra center is out of balance it can mean that it’s over-active or under-active, or possibly congested or blocked. If this happens it is usually felt on a mental, emotional or physical level.

Breathe Deep and Let Go of Stress

When you think about your breath as being your link to life, it takes on a whole new meaning. In our fast-paced lives, most of us forget to breathe fully as everything occupies our minds, except for breathing. We are often so caught up in meeting the needs of family, work, etc., that we fail to nurture ourselves. When my daughter was born I noticed how every single part of her body moved with her breath. It reminded me that deep breathing is as natural to us as it is a child, and it fades away as we get older, unless we pay it some attention.

Releasing Tight Muscles: 5 Simple Yoga Stretches

Stretching is probably one of the best things you can do for your body.  Stiff muscles can eventually turn into injured ligaments, bones, back pain, shoulder pain, etc.  I think it’s just one of those things we normally leave out of our regular exercise routine.  We think after we have a great workout that we’ll just go home after the gym or run and do some stretches when we get home, but by the time we get there we forget about it.  Well, I am here to tell you that there are some great simple yoga stretches that can really help complement any type of exercise regime you might have quite well, so that you don’t feel tight after, say a long run or hitting the weights.

Pregnancy and Yoga: Basic Tips on Why You Should Practice

Prenatal Yoga is a great way to stay healthy and to help you prepare for the birth of your baby. Prenatal Yoga helps women work on strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and stability, while focusing on breath and relaxation; this will of course help make labor and delivery easier. (not easy, but easier.) Yoga helps us learn how to, and remember to breathe, something that is not always easy when a woman is trying to balance life with a baby growing inside her.
