Top 10 Fitness Trends for 2015

runnerIn this year’s “Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2015: What’s Driving the Market” published in the November/December issue of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal®, the top results on what’s going to change and shake up your work outs for the biggest gain (or loss, so to speak) are in. The American College of Sports Medicine asks thousands of fitness professionals across the world come up with a great list of what is trending in gyms and in the fitness minds of people for 2015, and the list may surprise you. Popular exercises like spin and Zumba have dwindled lower on the list and others basics have crept back up the chart.

push up plank1. Body Weight Training: Topping the charts is body weight training, which uses little to no equipment (other than your body) to perform basic lunges, push-ups, pull ups, planks and squats. Perhaps because it is more affordable and you can do these almost anywhere.

2. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): More and more jump rope legspopular, HIIT involves short bursts of activity followed by a short period of rest or recovery. These are your Beach Body and RIPPED workouts that bring DVD aerobics and modern day boot camp together. The best is that most of these HITT workouts can be completed between 20-30 minutes. Biggest amount of gains for the shortest amount of time.

Health gyms and institutions are everywhere and with the growth of the on line based certification and schools, fitness and nutrition professionals are growing at an exponential rate. It’s always a good idea to go with someone that has extended knowledge on how to best execute certain exercises and plans for goal achievement. And they are like a built in fan and cheering squad.

4. Strength Training. Therefore, many health and fitness professionals are taking the time to create age-appropriate fitness programs to keep older adults healthy and active.

9. Functional Fitness. This is a trend toward using strength twisting crunchtraining to improve balance and ease of daily living. Functional fitness and special fitness programs for older adults are closely related.

10. Group Personal Training. In kickback2challenging economic times, many personal trainers are offering more group training options. Training two or three people at a time makes economic sense for the trainer and the clients.
