Gas and Bloating: Be Gone!

-

tummySometimes we wake up feeling a little bit round than we remembered going to bed feeling. Our face is just a little bit more “chipmunk” or our middle area is squishier. Perhaps our inside bellies don’t feel quite as good, either. Maybe too much green juice or worse yet, fried summer BBQ and fair food. Whatever the factors may be, the following are great tips to beat the bloat.

  1. Drink Your Waters

waterThis tip is perhaps always on the top of my “what you should do” lists. Good quality (alkaline and living) water will be able to flush your body of any excess toxins that is creating the bloat. Hydrating the body will also rid the body of excess sodium while replacing and stabilizing the magnesium and potassium balance. Drink a little (one to two cups a day) of fresh and organic coconut water which will replace lost electrolytes as well as re-balance your body’s potassium reserves.

2. Probiotics

tummyMake sure you are taking your probiotics (20-40 billion live cultures a day suggested for daily maintenance). These good-for-your-gut living bacteria will help with gastro-intestinal functioning and digestion. People who are sensitive to cruciferous vegetables, legumes, acidic, processed or spicy foods will greatly benefit from taking a daily dose of probiotics.

3. Eat Potassium Rich Foods

skd286922sdcPotassium helps the body maintain internal fluids and electrolyte balance. Too little and you many find yourself sluggish, irritable with high blood pressure. Consume these foods that are full of potassium: white beans, spinach or other dark leafy greens, sweet and baked potatoes with the skin, dried apricots, mushrooms, avocados, squash, yogurt, salmon and bananas.

4. Body Movement

yoga beach2The more you engage your body in movement (walking, yoga, lifting something, playing in the sand), the more your organs have an opportunity for an internal massage. Body movement and exercise allows for body bloat to dissipate and constipation symptoms to mitigate. Keep that body moving, and decrease the puffiness.

5. Essential Oils

Try using therapeutic or medical grade essential oils internally (taken intraorally under the tongue, in capsules or on the tongue), rubbing them on the abdominal area or on the bottoms of the feet. I suggest digestzen (doTerra), diGize (Young Living), Clary Sage, Peppermint, Patchouli, Ginger, Juniper and Fennel essential oils.

6. Fresh, Whole Foods

Seek your health care professional if you do not know how to rule out food sensitivity on your own. Choose foods that are filled with fiber (an organic smoothie made of vegetables and fruits is a great idea) but will not give you too much gas (such as cruciferous foods). I suggest everyone to eat a banana and an apple a day along with other greens such as spinach, romaine, celery, artichokes, parsley, and asparagus. Stay away from dried fruits, and candies, for the concentrated sugars may make you more gassy and bloated than you would like.

7. Watch How You Chew and What You Drink

stk74761corI suggest not to chew gum, especially if you have chronic gas in the belly. Chew slowly (between 20-100 chews per bite) and with your mouth closed. Eat consciously and at a slow pace. This will better ensure that excess air does not travel down to your belly and increase air bubbles. Also reframe from drinking carbonated drinks, including water. You don’t need the extra gas. If you need a pick me up or something to add excitement to your water, try essential oils (grapefruit, lemon, lime or wild orange) or slices of cool cucumber, melon or lemons.

8. Try Acupuncture and Massage

acupunctureI really believe that there if there is a condition to be made better, that acupuncture can help. In Eastern Chinese medicine, gas and bloating is the result of the qi (energy) in the abdomen being unbalanced. Not only will acupuncture bring back the “fire” balance in the body, self-massage in the abdomen should help as well.
